Chip Seal is a thin surface treatment consisting of an application of liquid asphalt or emulsion binder covered with an aggregate.
See below for more information on binder and aggregate options, as well as information on pre-coated aggregate.

· Less expensive
· Excellent skid resistance
· Fast setting - least amount of traffic disruption
CRS2P - Cationic Rapid Setting Polymerized Emulsion
· Most advanced emulsion for chip seal
· Emulsion modified with a polymer binder
· Good adhesion
AC15-5TR (TRMAC) - Asphalt-Cement, Polymer & Ground Tire Rubber
· Most tenacious binder on the market
· Very little aggregate loss
· Less downtime
· Requires clean aggregate
· Applied hot
CRS-2, HFE/EA 150 and HFRS-2 are also excellent emulsions for chip seal. Consult with your Missouri Petroleum
expert on the proper emulsion to use with your aggregate.
Natural Aggregates
Limestone and trap rock are examples of natural aggregate that are readily available in 3/8"-3/4".
· Fairly cubical angular aggregate (not round)
· Hard crushed faces provide better adhesion
· Readily available
· Trap rock and granite provide good skid resistance
Expanded Lightweight
Lightweight aggregate is produced by heating shale pellets to 450 degrees. Shale expands to create
a porous, lightweight aggregate. This is a good alternative when natural aggregates are not available or
when complaints from the traveling public are a concern.
Advantages include:
· Low mass
· Good skid resistance
· Reduced complaints from traveling public
Pre-Coat your aggregate with an asphalt coating that:
· Provides a darker, more aesthetically pleasing surface
· Reduces dust on the aggregate
· Reduces complaints from traveling public
· Promotes better adhesion with binder, especially with 5TR
Chip seal may be used to enliven a dry or weathered surface and seal & fill cracks to prevent moisture and air entering the pavement structure.
Chip seal increases the pavement lifecycle.
How is Chip Seal applied?
1. The surface is cleaned of loose rock, vegetation, and dust.
2. Asphalt cement, cutback asphalt, and emulsion is applied by a computerized, pressurized distributor.
3. Cover aggregate is applied by a means of a computerized, self-propelled chip spreader.
4. The surface is rolled by a rubber-tired roller.
5. Loose aggregate is broomed off the surface.
A chip seal will not increase the strength of an existing pavement. Chip seal will prolong the life of a sound pavement by providing a protective coating.
