Aggregate-based surface treatments should last 4 to 7 years depending on the condition of the street that is treated, the type of treatment selected, and the amount of traffic on the street.

Commercial driveway sealers should only be used on parking lots and driveways. Driveway sealers reduce the frictional resistance of the paved surface and increase the potential for wet-pavement accidents. They should therefore only be used on low-speed surfaces.

Emulsions are either positively or negatively charged. You can’t blend oppositely-charged emulsions in the same tank. This will result in the coagulation of material in your tank. Removing this material from your tank will be expensive and time-consuming.

Permanent patches should be made in areas where potholes exist and where there is severe cracking. Old material should be removed by milling or saw cutting in rectangular patch patterns. Hot mix should be placed into the excavated area and compacted with a steel wheel roller. Patches that have not been cured for at least three months should be primed and sanded. All remaining cracks greater than 1/8″ should be crack-sealed.

Surface treatments should be used on streets that are in “fair to good” condition. Surface treatments placed on streets that are in poor condition will perform poorly and are generally not cost-effective.
